Drawing and painting has always been a part of my life, but only recently my main focus. After high school I attended Johnson County Community College then Kansas University where I concentrated on painting, sculpture and life drawing classes. I completed my undergraduate education with a BA in art therapy from Fort Hays University. Since 1981, I have been working in the graphics and printing industry. In 2000, after visiting the Kansas City Artists Coalition’s Open Studios, I discovered the Olathe Visual Artists. My involvement with other Kansas City art organizations and my introduction to pastel soon followed. Pastel quickly became my favorite medium. I am fascinated by light, reflected and direct. I like using different surfaces, sanded and unsanded as well as making my own with pumice and various pre-made brush on mediums. By layering colors on a textured surface I strive to create exciting paintings with life and depth. Pastels are truly my passion. Recent awards include the 2009 Paint the Parks Mini50 Grand Prize Purchase Award and the Cally Krallman Juror’s Award from the 2008 PaintAmerica Mini50 Competition. Other awards include a finalist in the Animal/Wildlife Category given by the Artist’s Magazine 25th Annual Art Competition in 2008, Johnson County Art Fest Purchase Award in 2007, First Place in the De Soto Artist Exhibition in 2007, the Art of Life Award from the 2007 MAPS National Pastel Exhibition, First Place in Pastels from the Chase County Prairie Art Plein Air Event in 2006 and a Juror’s Award from the same event in 2005. Also in 2005 I received first place in the Arkansas Pastel Society National Exhibition and in the Natalie Acker Memorial Exhibition and Second Place at the National Heartland Artists Exhibition.
