Czech & Slovak Illustrations & Art First Friday Art Opening August 5th, 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm August 5th through August 26th, 2011, Open M-F 9:00 am to 5:00 pm A special exhibition on loan to Buttonwood Art Space from the Embassy of the Republic of Slovakia .   The Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava Exhibition is a prestigious international competition.  The "BIB" Awards are given to international illustrators of children's books. Buttonwood Art Space will display art from Slovakian winners over the last 40 years.  This show is sponsored by the Czech & Slovak Club of Kansas City and donations will be accepted on behalf of the National Czech Slovak Museum in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Biennial of Illustrations is organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic and the main organizer is Bibiana, the international house of art for children.  It has been organized every odd year since 1967 in autumn (September, October) and it presents the best illustrations of children's books from all over the world.  The international jury of BIB awards the prestigious Grand Prix BIB, the Gold Apples BIB, the Plaques and Honourable Mentions to the editor.  The most beautiful illustrations are printed on stamps of the Slovak Republic. Also on display - Photographic prints by artist Lynette Darling Ubel, "The Rooftops of Prague" featuring the landscapes and features of the Czech Republic.  A traveling exhibit on loan from the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library of wood block prints by Czech artist, Marek Hoffman depicting the operas of Mozart will also be in the gallery.  On special loan for Opening Reception only - Lithographs by Alphonse Mucha.
